Personal development is something that every single person should be continuously working on. We are a work in progress and it’s okay to have setbacks every once in a while, but keeping your eye on the prize when it comes to coming into your own is the main goal here. We’re going to be focusing in on the steps you should take to create hopefully what will be a smooth ride towards a better you that you wear loud and proud.
1. Take Time for Yourself
It seems like a lot of the time human beings tend to be afraid of being alone since there is a comprehensible, yet saddening misconception that being alone means that you’ll feel lonely. When in reality, being alone is the perfect time for you to reflect and grow. With personal development, the most important thing to master is the parts of yourself you’ve yet to understand so you can recognize your strengths and weaknesses and see where you need to evolve. With alone time, this is something that comes a lot easier. Surrounding yourself with people who push you in a positive direction is a wonderful thing too, but having just you and your thoughts in a raw state is another necessary thing to embrace. When you’re alone you can be so much more productive with all aspects of yourself with nothing holding you back. It is a special time for you to unwind and just be.
2. Keep up on Physical Health

Personal development may be perceived as something that is mainly a mental thing, but your physical health is essential to focus on as well. When you’re making changes with your physical health, it intertwines with your mental state. If you are continually treating your body poorly, then you’re ultimately setting yourself up for disaster. Your body is a fragile frame that you must nourish and treat properly to have it return the favor. You can start by incorporating as many natural and whole foods as you can into your diet so you always feel on top of your game. Food is our fuel and we should be treating it just like that. Exercise is another thing that people can sometimes let slip away due to a busy lifestyle, or just purely because it’s a lot of work most of the time. Strength and motivation towards working out is a hard thing to develop, but it’s worth it! Good news too, the possibilities on how to work out leisurely are endless. Going to the gym, doing yoga, strolling around your neighborhood, taking your pet to a local park, etc. You can make anything a pleasurable workout if you have the desire to do so. People shouldn’t just focus in on working their body to the bone either, you do need to give your body downtime. Relaxation and rest is something that we cannot live without. We need to let ourselves have this time so we don’t overdo it and completely ware ourselves out. Our bodies are not made to be constantly pushed over the edge. We have to treat our body like the temple that it is!
3. Create New Goals, Always
You want to make sure that while personally developing you don’t let yourself get stuck in a routine because of comfort. You want to forever be thinking of new ways and ideas to push yourself out of your comfort zone and to new heights so you can consistently become a better you. Having goals in development is a great tool for motivation too. Sometimes it’s hard to keep motivation when you have life throwing curve balls left and right, but if you document something on top of setting your mind to it, that’s all the motivation you need right there! A psychology professor from Dominican University in California named Dr. Gail Matthews actually had done quite a bit of research on this exact topic. She did a study surrounding the art and science of goal setting, and discovered that you become 42% more likely to complete a goal if you write them down (The Huffington Post). I don’t think there’s really any harm in simply writing down your goals now, do you?
4. Reflect on Progress

Start writing down your progress, no matter how minimal it may be. Every accomplishment is something to celebrate when you’re attempting to go towards a brighter future. Even if it’s as small as waking up a little bit earlier to get a hardier breakfast in, YOU did that and YOU made it happen. Taking small steps is just taking steps towards something much bigger, and that is definitely something worth documenting for future reflection. So, smile about that and keep on accomplishin’!
If you’re not satisfied with life, or do not feel fulfilled, you have the chance to make a change every single day. Don’t feel pressure from time or people around you when it comes to coming into your own. Personal development is something that is a nonstop transformative journey and this is YOUR journey. Enjoy the ride!
